Meet Gavin
Gavin was diagnosed with isodicentric chromosome 15q (dup15q syndrome) when he was 5 1/2 years old. Dup15q Alliance is the charity that supports adults and children living with chromosome 15q duplication syndrome. This condition is a clinically identifiable syndrome which results from duplications of chromosome 15q11.2-13.1. Symptoms of dup15q syndrome can include developmental delays, autism, seizures, anxiety and sometimes, sudden unexplained death. Researchers think that approximately 1 out of 20,000 babies are born with an extra piece of chromosome 15.
Our son, Gavin, has experienced both obstacles and triumphs since receiving his diagnosis in 2009. Obstacles are making sure his academic needs are met, monitoring his health and keeping his childhood life fun and exciting while balancing therapies. He receives private physical, occupational and speech therapies in conjunction with those at school. Triumphs include his progress within his current school program along with transition into a program that addresses more of the academic side of things while allowing him to still flourish and strengthening his social skills. Gavin still requires a lot of one on one assistance but we pray that his Life Skills will continue to develop with all the support that is provided to him. Gavin is also involved in a baseball league called Tinley Park Challengers and enjoys activities at the Lincoln Way Special Recreation. Gavin will be graduating Mokena junior high school this year and will be attending Lincoln Way Central High school in the fall, as a part of their special needs school program District 210.
We have raised over $100,000 during the past six fundraisers for Dup15q Alliance. We take much pride in "giving back" to a charity that has given us to much. We are blessed to be amongst family when we meet other Dup15q families. We have made some great friends. And our continued support to the Dup15q Alliance wouldn't be possible if it wasn't for family, friends and businesses like yourself.
THANK YOU!
