On April 9th of 2020 we lost our very first grandchild Mila to a premature birth. It was devastating for us and painful beyond words for our daughter and her partner. We were robbed of a lifetime with a child we couldn’t wait to love and endured the most difficult emotion: there was nothing we could do to affect the outcome.
When our son and his wife had our second granddaughter, Claire, in January of 2021, we were overjoyed. She is beautiful, and precious. Only 18 months after her birth, Claire was diagnosed with Dup15q, a rare genetic disorder. The news shook our world, and we again felt the emotional struggle we experienced before, aching for our children and worried about Claire. Unlike our sweet Mila, we get to be a central part of Claire’s life. We are also blessed that Claire’s progress has been exceptional. Her drive and curiosity keep us all hopeful of her future.
With gratitude for her presence and trepidation of the unknown, we will do anything and everything for Claire.
From the caring arms of a grandfather to the full embrace of the Dup15q community and the Alliance, she will be nurtured and adored, I am most certain. I’ve run three marathons in my time on this earth. It seems somehow poignant for me to run my final marathon in Claire’s honor, as she is just beginning hers.
The Dup15q Alliance supports families affected by dup15q and has been invaluable to our family. They empower individuals living with dup15q syndrome and other related rare diseases to reach their full potential by advancing breakthrough research and life-changing therapeutic treatments.
That’s why I run for a reason.
